.eu was put in the root zone of the Internet Domain Name System (DNS) in March 2005 which means that, technically speaking; it has been in existence since then. .eu began accepting applications for domain names from end users on December 7, 2005. At that time, only holders of prior rights to names enjoying some legal protection in a member state could apply for those names as domain names before .eu opened for general registration on a strictly first-comefirst-served basis on April 7, 2006. This period of phased registration (Dec 7, 2005 – Apr 6, 2006) is referred to as the Sunrise period.

Although .com domains are officially intended to designate commercial entities (others such as government agencies or educational institutions have different top-level domains assigned to them), there has been no restriction on who can register .com domains since the mid-1990s. The opening of the .com registry to the public coincided with the commercialization and popularization of the Internet, and .com quickly became the most common top-level domain for websites. More and more companies are using .BIZ domain names to do interesting, informative and intelligent things online. Here are two "spotlight-worthy" .

In August of 1993, a foundation was established through the initiative of the then three German Internet Service Providers, the "Interessenverbund Deutsches Network Information Center (IV-DENIC)" to put out to tender the operation of the nationwide name server service.

In 1994, the University of Karlsruhe took over the administration and registration of the .de domains for an initial period of three years. The number of domains reached 20,000 in 96. 

The assembly of the IV-DENIC decided to found a cooperative society to administrate the German domains and provide the necessary infrastructure. The headquarters were established in Frankfurt.

Now, more than 100 people handle the over eleven million domains and make certain that the domain database, the name server for the .de domains and additional DENIC services are operational round the clock. Besides, for nearly all its services, DENIC now has complete hardware redundancy.

The domain name administration in People's Republic of China is done through a branch of the Ministry of Information Industry. This ministry oversees everything from telecommunications to broadcasting similar to the Federal Communications Commission in the United States. The registry is maintained by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). The actual registrations are done through commercial registrars similar to other parts of the world. Neulevel has entered into a partnership with CNNIC to market .cn outside mainland China.

The domain name is popular, and thus economically valuable, because it is an abbreviation of the word 'television' (other similar ccTLDs are .fm, .am, .cd, and .dj). The domain is currently operated by dotTV, a VeriSign company. The Tuvalu government owns twenty percent of the company.

By the early 1990s, the emerging internet service providers such as Demon, Pipex and BT became involved with the network and started to provide domain names to customers on a commercial basis.

Most countries have their own Top Level Domain. The .uk TLD was first used during the 1980s, and at that time a voluntary group called the Naming Committee managed the registration of .uk domain names.

As the demand for domains increased, a new organisation was needed to manage the .uk TLD and as a result Nominet UK was formed in 1996 as a private, not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee.

The domain is particularly popular in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, as nu is the word for "now" in Swedish, Danish and Dutch. Partially owing to restrictive domain rules for the ccTLD assigned to Sweden, .se, .nu was used for creative marketing of websites such as www.TV.nu. However, the .se domain was generally considered more professional than .nu and .com. Registrations of Internationalized domain names and Unicode special characters are also allowed.

nic.at has developed from its tasks. The demand for .at-domains has been great from the beginning - at the end of 2000 there were already 160,000 domain names registered. At the same time, the requirements for the domain management were increasing. New fields of activity - like customer care, registrar service, billing and accounting - were gradually taken over and developed by separate departments within nic.at. The technical operation of the .at-zone has remained with the Vienna University Computer Center (ZID). The increasing number of legal inquiries and domain name disputes between the domain holders (e.g. trademark rights) made it necessary to establish an internal legal competence - also with regard to legal disputes that were affecting the registry nic.at itself. The nic.at legal department has been quite successful regarding consultation and the settlement of legal disputes out of court.

In summer 2000, Richard Wein was appointed as the CEO responsible for finance, administration, organisation and IT. In September 2003, Robert Schischka joined nic.at as a second CEO, who is primarily responsible for the technical operation.

At his request, the responsibility for the registration of the domain names for .be was transferred to DNS Belgium, a non-profit association, established for this purpose on 2 February 1999.

To allow more flexibility, a complete liberalization took place, where everyone could register any name they liked.

As a result, the number of domain names doubled (89,718) and 3 months later 125,000 were registered.

A number of price cuts were implemented and brought down to 6 EUR.

In 2001, the rule of non-transferability of a domain name was abolished, and domain names could be traded freely.

In September 2002, the European Commission issued a call for tenders for the management of the .eu domain. DNS Belgium set up a consortium with its colleagues from Sweden and Italy to respond to the Call. The Belgian model forms the basis of the proposal.

A panel of external specialists awarded the management of .eu to EURid, the consortium of Belgian, Swedish and Italian registries. This decision was published in May 2003.

.SE was founded in 1997 and had sales of approximately SEK 65 million in 2006.

18th September 2003 - release of registration of domain names with the "xn--" prefix in the other zones managed by NASK; only Polish subscript allowed.

20th October 2003 - release of characters derived from the following subscripts: Latin-1 Supplement and Latin Extended-A.

3rd November 2003 - release of characters derived from the following subscripts: Greek, Hebrew and Arabic.

26th February 2004 - release of characters derived from the following subscript Cyrillic.

At the establishment of the .jp domain the domain was administered by the JPNIC, as part of their role as an overseeing technical body for the Internet in Japan. However, due to the growing importance and size of the .jp registry, it was decided at the 11th General Meeting of JPNIC in December 2000 to create a new corporation that would manage the .jp domain. Thus, the Japan Registry Service was created, and on June 30, 2003, officially assumed the duties of the .jp registry.

Registrations are processed via accredited registrars and domain names with Japanese characters (kanji, hiragana or katakana) may be registered at the second level.

SGNIC was formed in October 1995 with the main purpose of administering the Internet domain name space in Singapore as well as to provide a forum for the local Internet Service Providers and regulatory bodies to discuss issues related to the efficient administration of internet services in Singapore.

In November 1995, SGNIC took over the operation of Domain Name Registration (DNR) Services from the Technet Unit upon its acquisition by Sembawang Media.

Before 1997, the acutal operations were housed and operated by the New Media & Internet Cluster (NMI) of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). In Jul 1997, SGNIC was registered as a company in ACRA.

The procedures for registering .IN names will be simplified. This will allow anyone to register and use .IN domain names. We are upgrading the technology used to run the .IN registry, and .IN names will be available for signup through a variety of Internet service providers and other registrars. Soon .IN domains will be easy to buy, easy to use, and faster and more reliable than ever!

INRegistry is the official .IN registry. It was appointed by the government of India, and is operated under the authority of NIXI, the National Internet eXchange of India.

The new era for .IN began with a Sunrise Period. Owners of registered Indian trademarks or service marks who wished to protect their marks were given the opportunity to apply for .IN domain names before the general public. Sunrise applications were taken from January 1 to January 21, 2005. The date for the opening of real-time, open registration for the general public was February 16, 2005.
